Please find below the Monday Message from DG Jaco Stander!
Dear Fellow Rotarians:
Wow, what a week we had in the Eastern Cape! Visiting 8 clubs in the week starting with Uitenhage, Uitenhage-South, Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth South, Jefferey’s Bay, St Francis, Port Elizabeth and finally Port Elizabeth Sunrise. Thank you to the AGs, Club Presidents and our home hosts for welcoming us to your clubs and showing the great work we are doing in our communities. In line with our monthly theme, we saw some fantastic projects in the area of Early Childhood Development and looking at these projects, including our Global Grants in this area of focus, we are creating hope for the future. We are making a difference in these communities, and in a time where we need hope, these projects are delivering the hope we need.
We were again fortunate to meet our Rotaractors and Interactors at some of the club visits. We know that our organisation’s future lies with our youth and we have to find ways to bring our clubs into the future and make them relevant to what our youth are interested in. Last week we saw protest action for our environment, started by Greta Thunberg a year ago with her Friday school boycott and this year saw schools around the globe following her example with protest on both the 20thand 27thof September – one person can make a difference! We also had Wold Rhino day on Sunday and we know that we are doing great work via our RAGES action group. Did you watch the STROOP documentary on M-Net last night? If not, there will be some more broadcast this week. While on the topic of the environment, we are privileged to have one of our young Rotarians, Lekhooa Letsatsi from the Rotary Club of Maloti-Maseru, being one of 100 young climate champions to be invited to the UN Youth Climate Summit in New York. We also have our District Rotaract Representative, Nitesh Harry, being selected as one of the 60 Rotaractors to attend the 2020 Rotary International Assembly in San Diego, to train with the District Governors Elect. We have met so many great people during the last 3 months and it’s great to see how our young and new members are helping us change the face of Rotary in D9370. We need to #GrowRotary with new members that are young at heart regardless of their age – welcome to all the new members who have joined this Rotary year.
RLI training is coming to a club close to you and in addition to the training in Bloemfontein, we have had another session in Port Alfred where 3 Rotaractors joined the training. More sessions are planned for the following dates: 12 October in Port Elizabeth, 26 October in Viljoenskroon and 24 November in Empangeni. Please contact PDG Bruce Steele-Gray should you need more information on these sessions or want to book for the training.
We are at home this week catching up with our business and planning to celebrate Heritage Day in front of the braai as most of our South Africans will do – enjoy your Braai Day. We would also like to wish all our clubs, that are participating in the Rotary Family Health Days next week, well with their final planning. This is a great country-wide project and I urge our Rotarians to participate in the day by supporting the clubs who are hosting health days. We look forward to all the social media post and please remember to add our hashtags for the year #Rotary9370 and #ConnectWithRotary9370.
Our conference bookings are filling up and we are so excited to see our Rotarians join us for the cruise sailing from Durban on the 13thof March. We are planning a great programme for you and will keep you busy in the morning till the 2ndlunch seating with Rotary business and our fantastic guest speakers. This will allow you to enjoy fellowship and the entertainment on the boat for the rest of the day. As our speakers are on the boat with us, they will be available for extra breakout session in the afternoon for those who wish to attend. Please book your cabin for our District Conference on the MSC Orchestra by emailing Arlene at Discon9370@gmail.com
